TAKING A STAND ON MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Just Vote No: Engaging and Educating the Jewish Community to Defeat the Marriage Amendment.

Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Adath Jeshurun

Jewish Community Action’s board has voted to take a stand for marriage equality. The board action in September sets the stage for a major JCA organizing effort to defeat the 2012 ballot question that would enshrine discrimination into the state constitution. Voters will be asked to define marriage as only between men and women.

How do we stop this move to limit rights of same-sex couples? We develop leaders willing to motivate and mobilize our community by telling their stories and encouraging others to do the same.

To help lead this effort, join the JCA Marriage Equality Working Group. For more information, contact Adele Brown at adele@jewishcommunityaction.org or 651-632-2184.

A CORRECTION AND AN APOLOGY

To our members, sponsors, donors and allies:

On behalf of the Jewish Community Action board and staff, we want to thank you for  your generous support as members, sponsors, donors and allies.  Thanks to your support in 2011, we finished the year with a balanced budget, and even raised a little more money in 2011 than in 2010. Your support is essential as we pursue the many challenges in 2012, including defeating the marriage amendment on the ballot, stopping foreclosures and building a sustainable powerful Jewish voice for social, economic and racial justice.

We hope you have received the Jewish Community Action Social Justice calendar for 2012.  We specifically want to thank our sponsors and organizations/businesses who supported the publication of this calendar and helped JCA raise much needed funds.  We also want to express our sincere apology for printing the calendar using an ad from several years ago from Mount Zion.  We understand that this ad has several names listed that are no longer in these specific positions, including Jane Steinman, of blessed memory, who was listed as Executive Director. JCA worked very closely with Jane over the years and we appreciated her strong support of our work at all times.  The corrected page appears here.

WELCOME!

Jewish Community Action brings Minnesota’s Jews to work with the broader community to generate positive social change. Please consider becoming a member, subscribing to our email updates, and participating in our work:

Building leadership among Russian-speaking, Jewish elderly through Voice: Community Building Initiative. Through education, arts, and Jewish programs that they lead themselves, this community - which faces multiple barriers in the United States - is successfully organizing itself, developing its own voice, and learning
its own power.

Defeating the 2012 anti-marriage constitutional amendment. JCA stands for equality. Our tradition teaches us to pursue justice and uphold the dignity of each person. In this spirit, we are partnering with OutFront Minnesota, Minnesotans United for All Families, and other groups to support marriage equality and to defeat the proposed marriage amendment.

Giving a voice to a community outside of a congregation. Indie Jews is a vehicle for connecting unaffiliated Jews to organized power in the Jewish community.

Preventing foreclosures. Keeping people in their homes. Ensuring the strength of neighborhoods. JCA helped found the Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) and the St. Paul Fair Lending Coalition to do all of these things, while helping mortgage lenders improve their practices.

Reforming our nations's immigration system. We've helped extend Liberian refugees' right to stay in the United States, and now we're helping them on a path to permanent residency. We're also helping Latino immigrants find ways to access basic public needs
.
